And my sweet shop!

I grew up on the Kent coast and now live in the green belt. Although I work in London (and even lived there for sixteen years), it's the countryside that continues to give me the opportunities to indulge my senses when out with my camera; the colours, the sounds, the thrills and the anticipation. I often feel like I'm a kid in a sweet shop!

Many of the photographs have been taken at my favourite locations in Kent, but I'm also lucky enough to be able to visit Pembrokeshire quite frequently and feel rather spoilt in being able to experience three fantastically diverse locations on a regular basis - the rugged Pembrokeshire coastline and its vast sandy beaches; the shingle ridges of the south Kent coast and the green, tranquil beauty of the Kentish Weald. All of them offering something a little different, certainly in terms of birdlife.

My current set up is a Nikon D70s (replacing my trusty F80) and I use three lenses; a 50-50mm Sigma  telephoto for most bird life, occasionally coupled with a 1.4 teleconverter; a 17-35mm Sigma for a lot of landscape work (although I find the telephoto is equally useful); and finally I use a 180mm Sigma macro lens for close-ups of insects, flowers, etc. A tripod or beanbag is a must for me and I make frequent use of a remote.

I keep Photoshop tweaking to a minimum - usually limiting it to slight adjustments to saturation, brightness and contrast. I found this was more necessary when I was using slide film that I'd scanned in, but less so now that I've 'gone digital'. I'm an occasional filter user - despite having acquired a large collection of filters that I thought I might need! I most often use a polariser and ND full/graduated filters for landscape work or 'watery scenes'.

I'm not a professional photographer, sadly having less spare time to devote to the hobby than I would like, but nonetheless I hope to bring you an illustrative account of the fantastic wildlife I have come across whilst on my days out (and may even get into the blog habit with any interesting news). However, if you are interested in purchasing any of my pictures, please visit my webpage at Fotolibra , or contact me via my guestbook.

Incidentally, flying saucers are my favourite sweets , with floral gums coming in close second!

And when I'm not out with my camera, I'm often in with my guitars. I'm currently an occasional acoustic guitarist for singer/songwriter Jane Alston - having been a bassist in her former band "The Brendas" in my younger, wilder days!!!
